A photo book that turns years of showing up early, queueing, and staying late into a single, readable account of what it means to be a fan.
Context
Olga Zadedyurina spent years photographing fans at Pearl Jam concerts, documenting the culture around the band rather than the band itself. Two designers had worked on the material before this collaboration began — the photographs existed, but the book didn’t yet have a structure that matched the story.
Approach
The layout follows the emotional arc of a concert night rather than a conventional photo-book grid: before, the queue, first encounters, the regulars, entry, the show, and after. Text was treated as part of the photography’s rhythm — quotes and labels set in black, styled like urban signage — so pacing and tone came from typography as much as from image sequencing, giving Olga’s voice a consistent visual register from cover to close.
Outcome
The manuscript that had stalled with two previous designers now exists as a finished, independently published book — proof that what it needed was structure, not more photography. The photographs hadn’t changed; the way through them had.
